New Czech government underlines importance of sport, prevention and health

08 January 2026 | Country Update

On 5 January 2026, the newly appointed government of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš approved its programme declaration, which introduced a new ministerial position without portfolio for sport, prevention and health. The creation of this post aims to strengthen the political representation of these topics at the government level. The programme declaration emphasiszes regular physical activity as a key instrument for improving health, preventing disease, and strengthening physical and mental resilience, with the aim of reducing the prevalence of obesity and lifestyle-related diseases, increasing health literacy, and promoting a healthy lifestyle as a natural part of everyday life.

The programme declaration further outlines a wide range of planned measures, including improved access to sport and physical activity throughout the life course, modernization of sports infrastructure, and expanded support for recreational and school-based sports. Particular attention is given to the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases, the promotion of healthy nutrition, and the integration of physical activity into prevention and treatment programmes. The government plans to adopt a National Strategy for Sport and Physical Activity (2026–2030), review the role of the National Sports Agency, and prepare comprehensive legislation (a Sports Act). Overall, the new ministerial role is intended to enhance cross-sectoral coordination and give greater political weight to sport and prevention policies.
